Our Photo Safaris guide you to some of the world's finest wild and scenic locations with the main purpose of making great photographs. We design Photo Safaris to coincide with the world’s premier wildlife, natural history and cultural spectacles and to get you to the right places at the right time for photography. We strive to be in the field during the best available light and to that end we are normally on location in time to meet the new day as well as commemorate its conclusion. Since you are photographing alongside some of America's top outdoor photographers, expert in-the-field help is always nearby to advise you on the best way of getting the pictures you want, whether you are a beginner or professional. Most Photo Safaris are lodged in comfortable, first-class inns, hotels or tented camps usually located in or near the prime photo location.

Book your passage on one of our extraordinary expedition voyages. You travel by comfortably-outfitted oceanic research vessels through pristine wilderness and explore some of the world’s most remote and untouched shores. Since we exclusively charter an entire small ship for our group, we control all aspects of our itinerary. Shipboard life is thoroughly oriented toward photography and wildlife observation and we maximize our days in search of wildlife and great photo opportunities.

A fleet of sturdy and nimble Zodiac landing craft will allow us to set foot on very isolated shores, cruise among spectacular ice floes and quietly approach elusive wildlife. On shore, new wildlife and landscape opportunities unfold as we strike out in quest of spectacular images. Joseph Van Os Photo Safaris is world renowned for the amount of photography time we provide for our passengers on every cruise! Our experienced team of photo leaders is unsurpassed in the field and is always available to help you create exciting images.

Because of the extraordinary nature of these unique expeditions, enrollment fills quickly. Reserve your place today to be sure you will be among our group of like-minded intrepid explorers.

Our Digital Field Workshops provide a concentrated learning opportunity emphasizing digital photo-technique at a prime photography location, using images created in the field on your own laptop computer. Digital Field Workshops are a perfect introduction to the world of digital photography where dynamic field instruction and midday classroom sessions enhance your digital capture and image-editing skills—offering a brief introduction to the digital darkroom—converting images from RAW files and making minor adjustments in Adobe Photoshop®.

Our Instructional Field Workshops concentrate on photography basics without regard to whether you are shooting with a film or digital camera. They provide a learning opportunity highlighting composition and creative photo-technique in the field. Here master photographers/teachers share their photographic passion and offer in-depth instruction to help you get consistent and skillful results.

All Field Workshops—whether Digital or Instructional—are usually limited to eight participants and are often based at a single hotel to optimize time for teaching and photography. In a week chock-full of field instruction, you’ll sharpen your skills and photographic eye as you practice with the local wildlife and dramatic landscapes.

Our Field Workshops offer tremendous opportunities for photographers, in a small group situation, to receive some one-on-one expert instruction on a wide variety of photographic subjects, and an image critique with a nationally-known professional. These kinds of intensive instruction are simply not possible at seminars with large numbers of attendees. Joseph Van Os Photo Safaris Digital and Instructional Field Workshops are unique because we provide all meals, lodging and field transportation during the workshop, allowing you to concentrate on your image-making instead of daily logistics.

Our Wildlife Models Photo Shoots have undeniably changed the face of "wild" animal photography. On these shoots our photo subjects are trained and well-cared-for, captive-reared, predatory animals in ecologically realistic habitats. In the past, photography of trained animals was done only by some of the big-name pros, and both the location of these game compounds and the disclosure that pros used trained animals were strictly professional secrets. These days, "the cat's out of the bag," and our Wildlife Models Photo Shoots consistently produce images in the span of a few days that would have taken a lifetime in the wild. Joseph Van Os Photo Safaris has created numerous, unique wildlife models photo opportunities that will rapidly expand your wildlife slide file and strengthen your standing in camera club competitions. These shoots are excellent for serious amateurs and beginning professionals looking to enhance their stock imagery and digital composite uses. Just being in such close proximity to these spectacular animals is a thrilling experience.

Exploratories are the "dream phase" of a Photo Safari. Every year we scout new locations for possible tour development. First, we do advance homework to learn logistics and natural history. We scout the area during our exploratory tour and, after our visit, decide whether the trip will be included as a Photo Safari in our next year's catalog. Sometimes trips don't "make the first cut," often because of cost considerations or, perhaps, limited market appeal, or a critical logistical detail that can't be worked out—one that keeps a trip from operating as smoothly as it should. Exploratories offer adventurous travelers the ability to journey with our leaders on our initial survey to an untried (for us) destination. Logistics can (and do) change on these trips while they are in progress and participants on these adventures must expect the unexpected. We aim for the same standard of comfortable lodging and good food that we do on the Photo Safaris.

Sometimes our dates don’t mesh with your busy schedule. Or, perhaps you have a group of friends or family who enjoy traveling and photographing together. Independent travel allows you the flexibility to choose your own traveling companions and set your own travel dates and length of stay.

Take advantage of our vast network of guides and operators! Our knowledgeable staff will help you select an itinerary that suits your needs, often quite economically, to almost any park, reserve or cultural destination we travel to on our scheduled departures, as well as to numerous destinations where we don’t have scheduled departures. The same top-quality ground operators we use for our regular tours facilitate Joseph Van Os Private Photo Safaris. Please contact our office for more information.
