Straddling the spectacular canyon country of northern Arizona and southern Utah, 200-mile-long Lake Powell creates an astonishing landscape. Here deep blue-green waters merge with brilliant orange-red sandstones of buttes, spires and mesas under expansive western skies. With nearly 2,000 miles of shoreline where countless photogenic coves and side canyons of the Colorado River and its tributaries probe deep into the heart of the Colorado Plateau, Lake Powell is an otherworldly blend of seductive rock formations and a vast man-made domain of water.

Lake Powell Photography Tour - Rock Formation in Lake Powell
From a daring early expedition down the wild Colorado River by Major John Wesley Powell in 1869 to the construction of the Glen Canyon Dam in 1956—although the lake did not reach its high water mark until 1980—the area has inspired awe, as well as controversy. Today, the land and waters are a recreational wonderland—and a boundless source of striking panoramic images for photographers.

Grand vistas stretch from shore to shore—a wide-open world where the sun sweeps over stone and water, electrifying the clouds and sandstone cliffs with morning’s lavenders, pinks and reds that give rise to the fiery oranges and magentas of sunset. In quiet coves, glowing escarpments reflect in still blue waters and narrow side canyons lead to hidden scenic gems.

Lake Powell Photography Tour - Towering Red Monument Rises From Lake Powell
Distances on the lake are vast, but our beach campsite in Labyrinth Canyon will position us perfectly for our explorations. With logistical support from our houseboat and smaller watercraft, we photograph in Face Canyon and West Canyon, among others; early one morning we venture further uplake to Rainbow Bridge National Monument. In the early days of autumn, the desert air cools—perfect conditions for sleeping under the vast starry skies.

Whether photographing from the myriads of rose-colored beaches and graphic slickrock shores, from the high deck of our motorized pontoon boat, or—for the more adventurous—from a kayak that can travel deep into narrow twisting side channels, photo subjects abound in every direction. Join us on Lake Powell, where panoramic vistas of dazzling beauty appear around every turn and myriads of coves and canyons beckon for exploration.

Day 1 (Oct 4)
Arrive Page, Arizona, and transfer to our hotel in time for dinner. An optional shuttle transfer from Phoenix is available at additional cost. (D)

Lake Powell Photography Tour - "Alligator Skin" Beach
Day 2
One full day to photograph in the Page area. We hike to Horseshoe Bend for the classic image of the Colorado River as it makes a picturesque bend more than 1,000 feet below our overlook. Later we explore Water Holes Canyon, a less well-known slot canyon and, at sunset, photograph broad Lake Powell vistas from nearby overlooks. (BLD)

Day 3
We board our pontoon boat at Antelope Marina and motor uplake to our base camp and support houseboat in Labyrinth Canyon. From the time we enter the main channel of the lake, the breathtaking panoramas of sky, sun-drenched rock and turquoise water unfold before us. In the afternoon, we venture further into the canyon. After dinner, as the sun sets, we capture the last rays of light from our beach camp. (BLD)

Day 4
An early morning boat trip uplake and a 1-mile hike brings us to Rainbow Bridge, the world’s largest natural bridge—a soaring 275-foot span of water-sculpted Navajo sandstone. Long held sacred by local native tribes, this rare rock formation glows in the early light. Later, as we make our way downlake, we will photograph one of several coves and side canyons along the way. (BLD)

Day 5
We travel to Face Canyon and later photograph the towering landscapes in Padre Bay—including Padre, Cookie Jar and Gunsight Buttes. (BLD)

Day 6
Morning in West Canyon, where high, sheer walls rise abruptly out of the water. In the afternoon we return to Antelope Marina. (BLD)

Day 7 (Oct 10)
Depart at any time today (optional shuttle transfer to Phoenix is available).
